Hide n' Seek
By Anthony Douglas Gere

Up late night trying to go to sleep again, and can't seem to find the lamb jumping
over those dam hurdles that will make me fall asleep. Maybe I cant find him because
I more than likely ate his fat little ass the day before, with some peas and carrots.
Who came up with that saying anyways, "Counting Sheep", why isn’t it cows or
chickens or some other farm animal that we speak about when we try to go to
sleep?. Anyway, I'm about to go on a trip in the morning, and now dealing with more
issues than I care to mention. So basically, I'm doing my late night, early morning
routine in watching Leno, Conan and now, Carson Daly, and hear this woman
belting out a song that has me feeling like a Million dollars after taxes. She's pouring
her heart again in a song, and not to get too far off track, don’t a lot of my theories
start with songs and the things I hear? Interesting huh? Okay, maybe not, but it
seems like that to me. But in the big picture, she wasn’t doing anything that should
make you wake up the President or anything, but she was singing another love song
that touched me better than the last woman that was in my bed doing vertical
gymnastics. Come to think about it, my friends were on Leno last week, performing
their smash hit that’s featured on the 2006 Olympic commercial, so go pick up their
album. Flipsyde is their name, so there, I gave you guys a plug, now leave me
alone!!! (smile). But once again, I started going into a romantic trance, and
formulating a strategy, to find what I’ve always been looking for. You see earlier in the
day, I had the pleasure of sitting in my Aunts backyard, and watching my nephews
run around the house with my cousins and other family members. Its kind of cool to
reflect on if I was this active when I was younger, and the mental mind state I was in,
when I didn’t even know what a mental mind state was. But anyway, my Aunt also
has a older son, and he’s right at that age, when he is truly impressionable. You
know, when they go beyond noticing girls, and start thinking that its cool to have
multiple ones, and be labeled asa player. Yeah I thought I was all that back in the
day, now I just laugh, and thank God I made it out of that phase, and appreciate the
ability to know the difference. Steve, my younger cousin, strolled in the backyard wit a
couple of friends, and they had just came from the mall. They had their pants
sagging, over sized t-shirts, hat tilted to the side and wearing enough cologne to
make you think they drank a
gallon of it and was sweating it out from the burning California heat beating down
on their young bodies. They even have a little limp in their step, and you would
swear you was looking at the lost episodes of Shaft or Superfly, in watching these
youngsters grace us with their presence at this informal Bar-B-Que. They walked
up my way, and while I was engaged in a friendly game of dominoes, over heard
them whispering. You see my family, not immediate, but family members have
never seen me working to get where I am at now, they only seen the results in
my efforts. So needless to say, they’ve only seen me driving up to gathering in
fine cars with finer women, and not walking alone with demons sitting on my
shoulders. Its sort of like the myth of the streets or in the inner cities I think. You
know, where the youngsters hanging out and walking home from school, see the
hustlers and drug kingpins driving in their nice cars with the pretty desperate
women you don’t see are desperate, and you as a youth, think they got it goin’ on
base on appearance, and appearance and cheap talk alone. Where as a youth,
you don’t realize the real movers and shakers, are moving and shaking inside the
buildings, not standing outside of them trying to make a buck. Where tangible
cosmetic things, mean more to you than the process in obtaining them. Where you
think you have it all figured out, and only realize when you are older, that success is
just like the game you played as a child called, hide n’ seek.
