Humble Pie                                                                                                    Page 2
By Anthony Douglas Gere

I do believe that those who work hard will be rewarded in some way, and my coach
said it best when he told me that the only time success comes before work is in the
dictionary, and I do believe that with all of my heart when the playing surface is
equal, and all things are the same. But we as humans are not equal, each of us has a
gift, and in my opinion, the biggest sin of all is not using the gift God has given us. But
who defines success outside our own individual beliefs, and who understands the
journey of achieving our goals better than ourselves?

What I’m getting at is this, celebrating at the expense of others for a moment, only
down plays the years of climbing that ladder in reaching and finally achieving our
dream we’ve worked hard for. I mean what is more valuable, and who really has
the right to celebrate flamboyantly, a person who is used to scoring many points
that score another, or the person who rarely scores makes one ? Think about
that question, and then answer the question did they eat humble pie when
celebrating, and what did they eat or praise when they failed?

Now thinking back to the awards shows I spoke about in the opening paragraph,
why do the winners always thank God for their status or achievements, and
not thank Him for their mis–fortunes when they seemed to fall short in what
ever field they are involved in? How many times have you heard the person in
the losing locker room thank God for coming in second, or losing? Shouldn’t
we also thank Him for allowing us to participate and the blessing of
experiencing the lesson many others fail to witness? Why do we only call his
name when we need some thing or are in desperate measures or dire
straits? Why can’t we thank him for the lesson and the standard we have
now learned in not winning, to come back stronger the next time to hear the
echoes of the previous recipient? Maybe our God is only a rewarding God,
who only blesses those who call Him in trouble, but personally, I don’t
believe that. You see, when we are down and out, we pray and find religion
beyond the Great Pyramids or Books of whatever Disciple we find in our
memory banks. When we are in need, we pray for salvation and a way out
of the darkness that we couldn’t see in the light. But when we are on top of
the mountain, living life to the fullest, having fun, kicking ass and taking
names, we seem to forget who got us there and showed us the light we
couldn’t see when we get there and when we were blind. I myself would
thank God for letting me make that game winning shot, and forget about
him or question him when I would miss it. I also used to forgot the times
when I drove a old multi colored car with four different tires and three hub
caps and a crusty a.m. radio that got three stations on a good day, that got
me around without a problem when I wasn’t as glamorous as now, but
praise the stylish vehicle that sees my mechanic more than I see it, and
cost the same amount as the old car I had in repairs alone each time I take
it in.  For some reason I bitch if I make only I million a year, or only have 10
girls that want me, when in contrary I used to pray for one good woman and
look for change under the cushions of my couch to buy a loaf of bread. They
say you only know better when you experience better, and you don’t know
where your going unless you remember where you were at. I agree with both,
that’s why now when I dine, I always remember to order a slice of humble pie,
because that can not be regurgitated, just recycled in it’s purest form for
others to taste.
