Being born and raised in the bay area, many people think I am a Raider,
Oakland A’s, San Francisco 49er or Giants fan.  I am a sports nut, hell, I played
them for the better half of my life, but I am not.  There is more to it than just the
score or who is playing on the court, diamond or field to me.  I mean how can I
support a team like the Raiders that up and moved leaving behind thousands
upon thousands of fans just for money?  I mean yeah, I’m a business man and
understand the premise, but dam, how much money does one man need and to
me, the quick money never outlast the long term.  How can you trade Joe
Montana, the man that brought you your first Super Bowl or have a fire sale like
the A’s did after they won the Word Series and hope to keep your fans that
support your team?  Even the Warriors, that are basically a farm team for the
rest of the league, don’t reward their players, so no, I am not a Bay Area sports
fan for the teams, thought I do appreciate their contributions to the economic
rewards they bring to the many that live here.  Now you may think this is a
sports theory or a man rambling on about athletic entertainment, but its not.  It’
s kind of like the movie “Cinderella Man”, that centers around boxing, but has
much more to it like the will of the human spirit, and the morality his integrity
feeds off of, if you really pay attention.  But I did this interview the other day for
a magazine, and they asked me to list some of the qualities I find appealing and
not appealing about myself.  Now of course we all have these memorized
answers that are similar to a Hollywood script we tell people, but then we also
know the answers inside of the pit of our stomach that many refer to as
Skeletons in the closet.  I mean dam, I more than likely have so many bones in
my closet, that I could give the local Cemetery a run for their money.  And oh
yeah, I’m not the only one, so stop judging me, and read this dam theory
(smile).  Anyway, he ask me was I the type of person that if you give him
lemons, would I make lemonade?  I said not really, because lemonade runs
out.  I’m the type of man that slices open the lemon, and plant the seeds so
later on, there will be more lemons for me and others to do what ever we
wantedto do with them.  But in replying to him further, I told him that on the top
of my list that I would answered to him again, was loyalty.  He pause, smiled,
look down and wrote that title down and then looked back at me with a grin.
Then after breaking down again and really giving him the non politically correct
answer, I still had loyalty on atop of the list and he nodded his head and
continued with more questions about me.  You see as long as I can remember,
have always been a Dallas Cowboy, Los Angeles Laker and New York Yankees
fan.  Maybe it was because they were on television a lot, or when I became
receptive to camaraderie, they were the teams I could really relate to.  To me,
what sets them apart from the rest of the pack is this; the take care of their
own.  I don’t care if a player is on drugs, blows off all of his money or has his
leg amputated, they always have a place for them in their organization.  It’s like
they’re a family, and like a friend of mine that went to USC and played football
told me, one reason he went there is because they love you even after you are
finish playing for them.  My alumni at high school and college are okay, great
actually, but nothing like the fraternity of players that once played for these
storied franchises that has established tradition as purely routine and
expected nothing less from those that enter into this domain.  I remember
being very young but having the pleasure of playing in the San Francisco
Summer Pro League when I was a freshman in high school.  I mean everyone
from the Bay Area and wanting to make a NBA team from around the country
would play here in this event for fans, scouts and other players trying to find a
measuring stick on there play and performance,  How I got in, besides my
talents, was my uncle had a “in” with one of the coaches that allowed me to
ride the bench and observe the work ethic of these gifted athletes.
