Style N’ Substance
By Anthony Douglas Gere
“All that glitters is not gold, though it may shine as so”, that’s a good statement to start off
with today. What about the grass might be greener on the other side, that’s another, but
enough for quotes and things like that for now. Let’s deal with theories and deep
thoughts for the hell of it, to maybe spark something out of nothing inside both of us. The
question is and what will hopefully surface now, is how can we take this T.O.T. to another
level with out leaving behind what it’s meant to be all about, that will be the challenge. Ever
since I came up with the title, I’ve let many thoughts marinate in my mind, to maybe bring
forth the best effort I can think of right now. So understand the topic and the under currents
that flow in it’s stream, and try to take what you can from all of this. Now seeing how I was
watching this movie the other night about a baseball player that believed that his only
commitment was to his career, I began seeing many other things he was purposely
leaving out of his life, and many more he had no knowledge of even existing. To say the
very least, the movie is a great adaptation of what tunnel vision is, and how though we
feel we must concentrate on what is important to us, many other things stem from that
very branch, good and bad, and the responsibility for all of that can last forever if we
want to see or deal with it or not. That’s the difference between Style aNd Substance.
Now what I ask of you right now is this, if you picked the correct numbers on the
winning lottery ticket on the next drawing, who would you share your good fortune with,
and most of all, would you change your immediate surroundings or simply move and
improve your environment & people around you that doesn’t fit into your so called
caliber? Question number two, if you’re involved with someone that stands by you
through thick and thin, and they are not what you would consider attractive to the
eyes of society, would you trade them in for a spruced up model that looks like they
just peeled them self out of a magazine, or would you try to improve who they are
comfortable with and have been from the start? Ever seen the movie, “White Men
Can’t Jump”?, in the end, was the lady who won on the game show correct to want
to improve the man she was with, or was she out of line wanting him to improve
his status to fit her recent success, because they’re moving up in the world? I for
one have my own opinion, but can not say right now because I don’t want your
answer to by swayed one way or another by the direction of this theory. What I do
know is that each circumstance is unique within it’s own right, and to not
respect that is wrong to me, so I will allow you to feel what you want on this one
(smile), if you keep reading and applying it to your own personality and way of
thinking.
I remember when I was on the verge of be successful, my motto was this: I can
not take anyone to the clouds of joy, if they haven’t experienced the sorrows of
hell with me. What it means to me is this, the roads I’ve traveled, the ups &
downs, the heartaches, the rejection and the moments of supporting me when
all not involved said to give up on me, means a lot more to me than a pretty face
or someone that will make me look go to you instead of to me. So in many ways, I
understand why when someone becomes famous they stay with the mate
that stood by them from jump street. You can never repay loyalty or
unconditional support, just like you can never replace it when it leaves you or
shows you a bumpy road out of your own misfortunes. Many view the aftermath
of what one has been through and wants to be a part of something already
created, but they can never enjoy it because they do not know what it is all about
and doesn’t respect what battles one fights when achieving such a honor, like
living. So all and all, what I feel we all must understand and realize when
viewing what seems to glitter like gold, we can never stop seeing the difference
between Style aNd Substance when it comes to flash and foundation.
So in closing this theory of thought (t.o.t.), I want to say that the movie about the
baseball player was pretty real to me, because he was trying to operate on
this stage where he was almost numb and couldn’t feel anything but his own
energy he was giving to the object or game. He didn’t want anything to disrupt
his concentration and affect him in a sensitive way to make him vulnerable.
Now yeah, he was lonely most nights, but he wasn’t alone, and that’s something
many can not separate. He wanted to feel loved, but what he loved was not a
person, it was an object capable of only giving him what he wanted to accept. It
was not a two way street, and had been around before him, and will continue to
have many more lovers and admirers after him.
