Thank God for Birthdays
By Anthony Douglas Gere
Birthdays, a moment in time that marks the day or event of a creation, birth and
existence to all of us lucky enough to be conceived by our carrier and maker.
This day, un-like any other day, sparks celebration and the realization that we
as blood flowing beings, are excelling towards the end of an age and
welcoming another period of unknown territory, namely a untamed future. The
expectations of self, and the peer pressure put on us by society, brings force
fed maturity and sometimes responsibilities to many that may not be in a
position to understand the guidelines genetically instilled by our forefathers
and others of birth to live by. What can also be expected in this time frame, is
the rewards of celebration, a celebration of remembrance that recalls growth,
time and placement in which past experience become present realities. The
full blown acknowledgment of reaching such a milestone often brings
presents, gifts and greeting cards in a material nature. Now seeing how we as
people capitalize on the many needs and wants of our own society, I marvel
and honestly envy the Hallmark Corporation for being the leader in this field of
the ultimate capitalization of events, greeting cards. What I do not admire is
the trivial way we as the giver of praise, select each card we send or give to
the person that has made it to a point of celebration where many others
have failed, through death, religion or what have you. That is why I thank
God for Birthdays.
Now recently I was in the local super market viewing the selections of a
greeting card to give to someone. I was overwhelmed by the selections
and variety of my choices to choose from in seeing the many card makers
and competitors besides Hallmark in this financial field. I then seen a
woman glancing in confusion on which card to select for someone, and
when I continued to looked down the aisle in a gentleman like manner to
rate her appearance, seen her legs that seemed to never end like this
sentence your are in, but quickly focused back on my task at hand
because I am, a gentleman. But while being in total fro myself and
surroundings, and visually trying to put my mind in a festive mind frame
to select the 5 by 7 inch piece of paper that represents millions of
dollars in revenue for somebody in a financial way, I seen that she had
a bundle of lets say, seven or eight different cards she had chosen,
and narrowed down her choices to select what was appropriate for the
occasion she deemed and seen fit. One was large in print, another,
glamorized with bright colors featuring glitter and ribbons.. Another
card was small and intimate, and the others generic with minimal effort
by the manufacture and creator. At this point, I said to myself, self,
if you could create any card in the world to make this person know that
you took more than 15 seconds to select, find a envelope and purchase,
what would it look like? That got me thinking and going to that happy
place I seem to visit so often in writing my theories of thoughts, and
came up with one called, " Thank God for Birthdays.
