That Round Triangle Looking Thing
By Anthony Douglas Gere

Riding on the subway train today, I really noticed something I was already
aware of, but really not to the magnitude of it today.  It was silence.  Silence so
loud that you could almost hear the lungs of hundreds of early morning
passengers inhale and exhale on and off rhythm. Loud enough to notice there
wasn’t anything being said, but thoughts speaking loud on the faces of
strangers looking at each other.  Everyone on here is going somewhere, and
why they’re going, is a starched reflection on where they just came from and
why.  Now me myself, I love public transportation.  I love the social diversity,
cultural contrast and relaxation of someone else taking me where I want and
need to go.  I mean isn’t it something to watch so many different people, use
the same vehicle or transport to go different places in the same area.  I really
enjoy the transit system here in New York, but the best to me is in the Bay Area.
In the Bay, you’re liable to see just about anything on the train.  I mean that
literally.  And I’m not just talking about on the streets or in the stations; I’m
talking about on the train its self.  But one thing you notice if you know it or not
on the trains and buses, is ads.  Advertising is staring you right in the face for
long periods of time, and you have no choice but to absorb it, or watch some
old guy get off on looking at a young high school girl, or some body digging in
their crotch to get comfortable.  You do notice people though when you think
they’re not looking at you, and not because they are in your face, standing
besides you or whatever.  People seem to sit and stand in a calm
nervousness, and it’s this energy that seems to give the train its extra little
boost sometimes.  Now in southern California where I also live sometimes,
the transit or public transportation sucks rhino cock.  I mean it.  It is totally
ridiculous, and more than likely, why the 405 is like a parking lot 75% of the
time.  You see because the transits system becomes very selective and
specifically catering in favor of certain areas due to status, good and bad,
it’s close to impossible to get around unless you have a car or enjoy
spending a small fortune on cabs.  But on the train today in the big apple,
I’m noticing people.  Looking at their faces from behind my tinted
designer I’m noticing the area of the towns and areas we are gliding
through. As I am noticing the type of people that are getting on and off of
the stops the train stops at.  I’m noticing the books people area reading,
the magazines and contracts on what many will be spending their time
today on.  I’m noticing the tourist, regular riders, strangers to the area, and
how they get excited when they are getting close to their stop.  But out of all
of the things I’m really noticing, I mean really noticing this morning, is
something I see everyday, and makes a small part of my day, enjoyable.  It’s
not the silence, the people, books, magazines or the person next to me.  I’m
noticing something and writing about it, while my earphones are in my ears,
magazine in my lap, writing to you in simultaneous fashion on my Sidekick.
And oh yeah, my I-pod isn’t on, I just don’t want to be bothered.
