The Timex Social Club
by Anthony Douglas Gere
The San Francisco Bay Area, this cultural potluck of personalities has been a
universal hot bed for music and expression for as long as I can remember. It has
created and produced some of the most influential entertainers of all time, and I for
one, have had the privilege and pleasure of greeting, meeting and seeing some of
these developments and performances from start to finish. I'm not sure why me or
specifically this area, but maybe it's the diversity we all face in growing up that
channels such a opinionated voice. You see growing up in Berkeley, I basically
experienced what life means to those residing in the Bay Area at the highest degree
on each extreme. These things range from the Hippies at Peoples Park, Corporate
Development & Integration, Liberal Politics, The Black Panther Party Movement,
Medical Marijuana, Haight & Ashbury, Timothy Leary, Community Involvement, The
Mitchell Brothers & O'Farrell Theaters, Professor Harry Edwards, The Silicon Valley
Technology Boom and the Gay & Lesbian Movement as a youth on a daily basis, and
a lot more if you really want to know the truth. So my personal shock level and its
value, is some what desensitized as far as measuring ones probability and
imagination in creating and believing in anything. I am also one that feels I have a
above average understanding on the limits one puts and places on things, when
evaluating the possibilities of achieving. I believe anything is possible if you are
willing to face the responsibilities that come with the task, and have no problem
displaying it, because that is all I know, was surrounded by, and it's simply my
personality and natural to me. Now if you know it or not, I was a principle player
in the music industry in my early years, and actually was a performing artist on a
B scale in numerous bands on many different levels before I went to the
business side of show business. My passion for music, only rivals my world
record as the number one participant in the electronic marvel called Ms. Pac Man.
Yes that's right, I actually hold the world record for scoring the most points in the
video game that ate more quarters than a phone booth, and will proudly prove
and show you if you have a few hours to kill and fifty cents to invest. It all started
back when I was in elementary school, and my baby sitter was the pool hall
next to my mothers office. It was pretty upscale, and all of the real hustlers
like in the movie The Sting would gamble there. My mother knew the owner,
so things were pretty safe because I would only be there after school which
was during the day time, and nothing really major took place that time any way.
But me and my friends would go there and spend hours upon hours playing
ping pong, pool and games to make a quick and honest buck. I even worked
there on the weekends cleaning the tables and stuff as a early teen, and also
when I came home from college in the summers, and basically learned how to
hustle in a street way by doing so. But as a youth, me and my friends would go
in there with three or four quarters, play a pinball machine, "pop" a lot of games
and then sell them to others wanting to play while watching us work our magic. I
guess the entrepreneurial part of me started then, because by the time my
mother was off work, we would have each made about four dollars in profit, fed
our stomachs and entertained ourselves while gaining a informal education on
street life, the value of a dollar and time efficiency.
